The Honey Pot
Customer: “I am really in a hurry. Can you come by today?”
Me: “I’m already booked up today – maybe tomorrow?”
Customer: “I need to get these blinds up ASAP, can you do me a favor and squeeze me in, maybe reschedule someone else?”
Me: “ Uh…”
Customer: “ If you have what I want I’ll give you a deposit on the spot. Also, if the price is right, I know a LOT of people who need blinds.”
So, the green rookie version of me juggled his schedule and rushed over to see this guy who was no doubt going to change my life with all the work he would send me. I went, I measured, I quoted. Guess what?
Customer: ”Ok, thanks, I’ll get back to you”.
No sale, then or ever.
My later approach…
Me: “Sorry, the appointments are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The earliest I can see you is tomorrow.”
Customer: “But I can get you so much work you won’t believe it.”
Me: “Thanks, I’m truly committed to rewarding customer loyalty – AFTER it happens.”
