Categories of Window Treatments
Blinds – any covering with tiltable slats/louvers/vanes whether horizontal or vertical.
Shades – coverings that can be raised/lowered or slide side-to-side.
Drapery – Popularly called curtains, a fabric treatment hung from rod or pole.
Top-treatments – decorative coverings such as cornices and valances, available as separate products in fabric and wood. Also, as valances, cassettes and fascias bundled with hard treatments.
Soft vs Hard treatments – a not always consistent or logical distinction but generally lumps factory produced blinds and shades in the ‘hard’ category and fabric workroom products in the ‘soft’.
Shutters – Hinged, louvered panels which can be inside mounted if sufficient depth is available or ordered with frames for outside. The faux wood versions are easily cleaned and moisture/ warp resistant. They require a more experienced & skilled installer and are pricey! Optionally available as sliding, track mounted panels for patio doors.
